冠词是一种不能单独使用的虚词，只能附在一个名词上，辅助说明这个名词的含义，冠词包括不定冠词a/an和定冠词the.

　　1、不定冠词an常用于以元音发音开头的单词前。

　　例如：

　　an hour/an English book

　　注意：

　　a useful machine,a university中的划线字母u发/ju:/音，而不是/∧/音。

　　2、指上文提到过的人或物，用定冠词the.

　　3、在世界上独一无二的自然物前面用定冠词the.

　　如：the sun /the moon /the earth /the world/the star

　　4、定冠词the用于序数词，表示方位的名词和形容词最高级前。

　　The first/the best/the right/left/east/north/south/west

　　5、在复数姓氏前加the,表示××一家人，常看成复数。

　　如：The Browns are going to Shanghai for a holiday this summer.

　　6、在介词短语中常用定冠词the.

　　如：in the box/behind the chair

　　7、指双方都能体会到的或心中有数的人或事物。

　　如：Close the door, please.

　　8、用于表示自然现象的名词前。

　　如：The wind was blowing /the rain was falling.

　　9、用于可数名词的单数前(统指类别)。

　　如：the horse is a useful animal

　　10、用于乐器名称前。

　　如：I can play the piano.

　　11、用于集合名词前指一整体，用于形容词和分词前指一类人。

　　如：the people (人民)the dead (死去的人们)the dying (垂死的人们)the wounded(负伤的人们)。

　　12、某些专用名词前加the的用法。

　　如：the Great Wall/the Yellow River

　　13、特别注意不能用定冠词的几个方面。

　　(1)在节日、星期、月份、季节、年等词前不用冠词。

　　如：in summer/in August

　　注意：

　　in the spring of 2002(这里表示特指，所以加the).

　　(2)一日三餐和球类运动名称前不用冠词。

　　如：

　　have breakfast/play football

　　(3)一些固定词组中不用冠词。

　　如：go to bed/go to school/at night/by bus.

　　(4)在next/last/this/that/前不加the.

　　如：

　　We watched the football match last Sunday.

　　14、在有些词组中，有冠词和无冠词意思不同，请注意区别。

　　In front of(在…前面)

　　in the front of (在…范围内的前面)

　　in hospital(住院)

　　in the hospital(在医院里)

　　15、a number of……许多，句中的动词用复数。

　　The number of……的数量，句中的动词用单数，与the population用法相同。

　　如：

　　The number of workers in this factory is about two hundred.

　　A number of students were present the meeting.
