　　One of the principles universally advocated by all the religions and cultures of the world is respect for elderly. In my opinion, the contributions that seniors have made to our society, and the wisdom and guidance that they can offer us, makes such respect well-earned and deserved.

　　We have inherited this world from our parents and grandparents. If not for the hard work of past generations, including the aged among us, the modern society that we enjoy today would not be possible. The elderly have worked to provide for their families, for society and for younger generations. Some of them have fought in wars for the freedom that we now celebrate, while others have led struggles to create better living and working conditions for posterity. As the recipients of the fruit of their labors, we owe them our respect and veneration.

　　Our elders, having witnessed innumerable worldly ups and downs over the course of their lives, are also an invaluable source of wisdom and guidance and , indeed, a piece of living history. A conversation with a grandparent can provide an understanding of the past that is far more meaningful than that which could be gained by reading an encyclopedia or textbook. The wisdom and experience of elderly people also make them the pillars of multigenerational households.

　　In conclusion, it is the aged among us who have enabled us to enjoy the lives we live today. Our elders have knowledge and experience that we are yet to attain, and have lived in a world that we will never know. Accordingly, I believe that we owe them our gratitude, love and respect.
