　　But the idea that the journalist must understand the law more profoundly than an ordinary citizen rests on an understanding of the established conventions and special responsibilities of the new media.其中第一分句为主干，第二分句为名词idea的同位语从句。第一分句中“rest on”是依靠依赖的意思，宾语是一个A of B and C of D的结构，A=an understanding, B=the established conventions, C=special responsibilities, D=the news media,翻译为D的B和C的A，而不是B的A和D的C。understanding of sth，译为sth的理解(A);sth指的就是B and C of D,这一结构翻译为D的B和C;因此对于sth的A,就是D的B和C的A。如果是理解为B的A和D的C的话，B的A和D的C是并列的，special responsibilities前面没有冠词,虽然作为复数名词,这样是允许的,但作为某种东西的依据(rest on),从逻辑上就欠缺一些,既无特指又未明确数量的东西怎么好作为依据呢?所以special responsibilities是与前边带定冠词的the established conventions 是并列的;另外未提及主体的understanding和主体明确的responsibilities如果构成并列关系,实际上是不符合说话惯例的.在考场上不会理解的这么深，那就靠定冠词the帮忙。
