　　A coalition led by the United States has increasedairstrikes targeting Islamic state militants in the cityof Ramadi. And Shi'ite Muslim forces are alsopreparing to deploy to the city.

　　Over the weekend, the Islamic State group claimedto have seized the entire city. However, the U.S. Defense Department questions that claim.

　　Hundreds of people reportedly were killed when militants entered the city overpowering Iraqitroops. AP and Reuters news agencies say thousands of people have fled the city in the pastfew days.

　　Ramadi is mainly a Sunni Muslim city. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi approves the Shi'ite militia'sredeployment to Ramadi although he had concerns over sectarian divisions there.

　　US Secretary of State has strong words for North Korea

　　The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the US has almost ruled out renewed talks withNorth Korea over its nuclear program. Instead, Mr. Kerry called for strengthening U.S. militaryalliances in the area. He also called for increasing international pressure to counter NorthKorea's behavior and disregard for human rights.

　　Mr. Kerry noted North Korea's recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test as an example ofa violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. He also denounced the reportedexecution of North Korean defense minister Hyon Yong Chol with anti-aircraft guns.

　　Mr. Kerry said the U.S., South Korea, and Japan alliance will continue to deploy the weaponsand forces needed in the area.

　　Injuries reported during railway protest in Southwest China

　　Officials say 38 civilians and more than 30 police were injured during a protest in China'sSichuan province. AP reports that the protesters were angered at a plan to build a railway wouldnot include their community.

　　The county government of Linshui said in a statement that 100 protestors attacked police andburned vehicles on Saturday. Forty people were detained Saturday and 20 more were arrestedSunday when the crowd again gathered. It is not clear if those held have been released.

　　Fighting in South Sudan condemned by UN

　　The United Nations Security Council has condemned fighting in two northern states in SouthSudan. It also noted repeated violations of a ceasefire agreement the government and rebelssigned early last year.

　　The Council said in a statement last Sunday that a government offensive in Unity State causesviolence that displaced 100,000 people. The unrest also halted aid delivery to civilians in thearea.

　　The Security Council also blamed the rebels for launching an attack on the town of Malakal inUpper Nile state.

　　A group of East African nations has been trying to mediate the conflict between PresidentSalva Kiir's government and rebels supporting former Vice President Riek Machar.

　　Nine killed in gun violence in Waco, Texas

　　And nine people were killed in gun violence between members of at least three opposingmotorcycle gangs in the city of Waco, Texas. The violence took place Sunday at a drinkingplace. Members fought with knives and fists. Police say several people were injured in additionto those killed.
