      今天还在NYT看到这样一篇文章，话题特别有考研的味道，而且和2014年的一篇真题所涉及得到话题是同一话题;而且就是一篇议论文最棒的范文，内容也非常有逼格。请大家一定认真看!

　　文章的开头是这样说的：

　　“We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom.”

　　“信息很多，智慧很少。”

　　This sentence captures the dilemma of our era.

　　“这道破了我们这个时代的困境。”

　　词汇：dilemma 困境

　　Yet the solution of some folks is to disdain wisdom.

　　但一些人给出的应对之道竟是鄙弃智慧。

　　词汇：distain 鄙弃

　　接着文章给出了这样一些现象的描述，佛罗里达州的州长不觉得人类学家对于这个州有多大的作用;

　　A leader of a prominent Internet company once told me that the firm regards admission to Harvard as a useful heuristic of talent, but a college education itself as useless.

　　某著名互联网公司的负责人曾经告诉我，该公司把哈佛大学的录取通知书当成一个人是否有才的具有启发性的有用依据，但并不认为大学教育本身有什么参考价值。

　　词汇：heuristic 启发性的依据

　　解析：but后面省略了：firm regards (并列引起省略，这是常见的语言现象.)

　　而家长和学生也是：

　　Parents and students themselves are acting on these principles, retreating from the humanities.

　　学生和家长们正按照这类准则行事，纷纷摒弃人文学科。

　　词汇：humanities 人文学科

　　解析：retreating 的动作发出者就是：Parents and students;这个部分独立成句就是：

　　Parents and students retreat from the humanities.

　　这里普及一下尝试:

　　Liberal arts = humanities= liberal education 都是表示人文社会科学;具体的翻译不太一样，当然你要是学高等教育学的，你要和我辩论说这三者是有区别的，我也不会搭理你，因为在考研文章中，粗略的分类就是把这三者混在一起说的。

　　作者非常明确的表述了自己的观点，是支持人文教育的，并且给出了理由：

　　1. First, liberal arts equip students with communications and interpersonal skills that are valuable and genuinely rewarded in the labor force, especially when accompanied by technical abilities.

　　词汇：equip sb with sth 使某人具备..

　　Genuinely 真正地

　　Rewarded 有回报

　　labor force 职场

　　首先，人文教育有助于提高学生的沟通和人际交往能力，在职场上，这种能力可以给人带来巨大的回报，尤其是在跟技术能力共同起作用的时候。

　　2. We need people conversant with the humanities to help reach wise public policy decisions, even about the sciences. Technology companies must constantly weigh ethical decisions: Where should Face book set its privacy defaults, and should it tolerate glimpses of nudity? Should Twitter close accounts that seem sympathetic to terrorists? How should Google handle sex and violence, or defamatory articles?

　　Defaults 默认

　　我们需要通晓人文学科的人来帮忙做出明智的公共政策决策——甚至是和科学有关的决策。科技公司必须不断对伦理决策进行权衡：Facebook的默认隐私设置应该是什么样的，该容忍些许裸体影像的存在吗?Twitter该关停似乎对恐怖分子颇为同情的账号吗?谷歌(Google)该如何处理关于性与暴力的内容以及诽谤性文章?(说的真尼玛有道理，kk在这里点赞了!)

　　3. Third, wherever our careers lie, much of our happiness depends upon our interactions with those around us, and there’s some evidence that literature nurtures a richer emotional intelligence.

　　词汇：emotional intelligence 情商

　　第三，不论从事什么职业，我们的幸福在很大程度上都取决于我们如何跟周围的人交流。有一些证据表明，涉猎文学有助于提高情商。

　　最后作者总结道：

　　In short, it makes eminent sense to study coding and statistics today, but also history and literature.

　　总而言之，在当下这个时代，学习编程和统计学固然意义重大，学习历史和文学同样十分重要。
